Voters Veto Munich 2022 Winter Bid

The Associated Press reports that voters have turned down plans for Munich to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Voters in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – one of four prospective venues – returned a “no” in a referendum for another bid, according to a provisional final result.

Referendums were held in Munich and three other venues and a majority of support was needed in all four for a bid to go ahead. Bavarian radio said opponents won a majority in all four communities.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen was the planned site for Alpine events.

Munich failed in its bid to host the 2018 Winter Games and had hoped to become the first venue to stage both Winter and Summer Games. It hosted the 1972 Summer Games.
