Reporting from Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced Friday that 85 voters will be eligible to elect the 2022 Olympic Games host city from Beijing or Almaty. To win, the city needs to gain a simple majority on the first and only ballot. Assuming there are no abstentions or spoiled ballots, 43 votes will be required to win.
In case of a tie, President Thomas Bach can cast a deciding vote.
Of 100 total IOC members, 11 have been excused from the session for various reasons. They are:
- Syed Shahid Ali
- Andres Botero Phillipsbourne
- Gerhard Heiberg
- Sar Le Grand-Duc Henri De Luxembourg
- Ole Einar Bjorndalen
- Joseph Blatter
- Kirsty Coventry
- James L. Easton
- Kun-Hee Lee
- Mounir Sabet
- Hayley Wickenheiser
Additionally, three Chinese national will not be eligible to vote since Beijing is on the ballot: They are:
- Mrs. Lingwei Li
- Mrs. Yang Yang
- Mr. Zaiqing Yu
There are no IOC members from Kazakhstan. Thomas Bach, as President does not cast a vote.
For the 2020 Youth Olympic Games race between Brasov and Lausanne there will be 81 eligible voters as there are four present members from Switzerland, one from Romania and two from France (where some Lausanne events will be held). For that race, 41 votes will be required for a victory.
