Reporting from Lima Convention Center in Peru – Just days after seeing the concise execution of the dual-allocation plans he conceived, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach will travel to Los Angeles to celebrate with future organizing committee members and other constituents.
The award of the Games simultaneously to both Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028 could be Bach’s crowning achievement in his presidency – guaranteeing two solid Summer Games host cities and a sense of stability through the next decade.
He’ll begin a short victory tour immediately and will #followthesun departing the Lima IOC Session Saturday to head directly to Los Angeles. Joining him will be IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper, IOC Executive Director for the Olympic Games Christophe Dubi and senior leaders of the IOC Administration.
With Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LA 2028 Chairman Casey Wasserman, who will initially lead the organizing committee, the IOC delegation will take in the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins NFL game to be played Sunday at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
Bach will ceremoniously light the Olympic cauldron that was used during the 1932 and 1984 Games, amid a montage of the stadium’s great Olympic moments.
That evening, Bach will walk the red carpet at the 69th Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater.
Bach paid a visit to California when LA 2028 was a fledgling 2024 bid in February 2016, and visited the UCLA campus that will serve as an Olympic Village in 2028.
LA 2028 is expected to form the official organizing committee before the end of the year.
