Hoping to ultimately bid for a future Olympic Games, the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is looking for support from other African nations for Durban’s bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
SASCOC hosted a dinner Sunday in Botswana for representatives from 16 of Africa’s Commonwealth countries to rally support for a Durban Commonwealth Games bid.
Hosting the Commonwealth Games is seen as a springboard to launch a bid for the Summer Olympic Games, in either 2024 or 2028, with Durban as the candidate city.
SASCOC hopes the experience of hosting the 2010 World Cup will boost its chances of landing the Commonwealth Games and ultimately the Olympics.
SASCOC’s chief executive Tubby Reddy said in a statement, “we are once again ready to invest in the hosting of a mega event. To this end we have targeted the need to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games”.
Cape Town lost its bid for the 2004 Olympic Games.
