A July poll taken by Loyola Marymount University (LMU) revealed that 83 per cent of Angelenos support a Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Until Monday, LA had been bidding for the 2024 edition of the Games against Paris but the city struck a deal with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to instead accept the 2028 Games along with certain financial concessions.
The survey, released Tuesday morning, was funded by LA 2024, the LA Area Chamber of Commerce and LMU.
LA’s interest, and possible acceptance of the 2028 Games became likely after the IOC voted July 11 to make the option available for the bid cities. Paris will now be elected to host the 2024 Games unopposed.
Last year an LMU poll reported that there was 88 per cent Angeleno support for the LA 2024 Games bid and a poll commissioned by the IOC in February demonstrated 78 per cent support for those Games.
Breaking down the numbers, 54.1 per cent were “strongly supportive” while 29 per cent responded that they were “somewhat supportive” when asked “How supportive are you of the City of Los Angeles hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 2028?”

Further, 70.3 per cent said they would likely attend some events in person, 44.5 per cent expect to volunteer and 20.7 per cent would “Leave town during the Games.”
The results of the survey were somewhat consistent across most demographics. The survey, taken July 13 to 18, reached 600 respondents both by phone and online.
The deal to bring the Olympics to LA for the third time in 2028, if ratified by City Council next week and IOC members at a September 13 meeting, will provide a (USD) $160 million legacy to fund youth sport programs in the city beginning January 2018.
LA 2028 Chairman Casey Wasserman said Tuesday “this new LMU poll shows Angelenos are excited to bring the Olympics back in 2028. LA already has a proven Olympic legacy from the ’84 Games. That’s why it’s easy to believe in and support our 2028 plan – low risk and ready to go.”
