Peru Bidding For 2020 Summer Olympics

Peruvian President Alan Garcia has announced that the country is bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. He said Wednesday Peru is ready for the challenge.

Garcia said Peru has sufficient merit to be the seat of the Olympic Games, pointing to its economic growth, high level of foreign investment, and decreasing poverty rates.

Responding to criticism that Peru’s infrastructure can’t handle the Olympics, he said Peru should think big and aim for the Games.

The largest athletic competitions in Peru so far have been the soccer tournaments America Cup in 2004 and the Under-17 World Cup in 2005.

According to the Associated Press, Peru’s government has created a special budget that allocated money for stadium renovations.
