India To Make “Strong” Bid For 2020 Summer Games

India Olympic Association (IOA) President and MP Suresh Kalmadi said Sunday India will make a strong bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. India has been considering a 2020 Olympic bid for the past several months.

UNI reports at the closing ceremony of Olympic Week celebrations Kalmadi asked the athletes to strive hard to garner medals both at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. He said the success of the twin games to be held in the country for the first time, will certainly serve as the barometer for the 2020 Games bid.

In April the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it would seriously consider India’s bid for the 2020 Games. At the time Kalmadi said, “we are talking to the IOC members informally now. We are expected to make a formal application by 2013 in order to host the Games in 2020. I expect full support of the IOC in our efforts in this direction”.
