The Los Angeles bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 Monday released additional renderings of several standalone venues for sports, accommodations and ceremonies that it proposes for staging the Games.
On Tuesday the 14-member International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission team led by Patrick Baumann will begin to arrive in the California metropolis to begin a three-day inspection to start the following day. IOC members and subject matter experts will review the LA 2024 bid books with the bid team and tour the venues in person before the visitors leave the city Friday for a similar trip to LA’s rival Paris.
Baumann, a 49-year-old Swiss lawyer is an IOC member and served on the Evaluation Commissions for the 2008 and 2020 Olympic Games. He was appointed to lead the 2024 process after Namibian IOC member Frank Fredericks stepped down amid an unrelated ethics investigation for which he denied any wrongdoing.
Baumann said in a statement to the media last week “we have two excellent candidates.”
“I and the other members of the Evaluation Commission are looking forward to learning more about their proposals and getting a first-hand look at the prospective venues. We will examine not only how hosting the Games would meet the needs of athletes, but also how it would serve the cities’ long-term goals for social and economic development.”
The LA 2024 renderings include The Olympic and Paralympic Village which will be located on UCLA’s existing state-of-the-art facilities, which already serve more than 16,000 residents each year in their modern and beautifully-designed residences.

LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said “I am excited to share renderings of LA 2024’s world-class stand-alone competition venues and Villages at USC and UCLA. The LA 2024 Games Plan places sports where they fit best in Southern California, engaging communities across the region, not just in our four sports parks.
LA 2024 considers its plans cost-efficient and low risk because no new permanent venues will required. Instead, the Games will be accommodated using venues that will already exist in 2024 – some already under construction by private organizations for other purposes and others only requiring overlays – or temporary venues.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the IOC will get a first-hand look.
The Evaluation Commission will then provide a comprehensive report on its findings to the other IOC members on July 5 ahead of presentations to be made by Los Angeles and Paris officials on July 11 and 12 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The IOC will elect a winner September 13 in Lima, Peru.
