The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thursday revealed its proactive and simplified approach to siting the 2022 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) this year.
The IOC confirmed in February that it will prioritize African cities to host the 2022 edition, allowing the continent an opportunity to stage an Olympic event for the first time with the more accessible YOG platform. Many African National Olympic committees have been contacted and Senegal in Dakar emerged as an early candidate last month.
Interested cities have already been joining a dialogue phase, and those wishing to move forward must submit feasibility studies to the IOC in May. The IOC will extend invitations to qualified candidate countries in July and an Evaluation Commission will publish a report to the IOC Executive Board in September.
The IOC will choose a winning bid from October 8-9 during the Session scheduled in Buenos Aires ahead of this year’s Youth Olympics.

An IOC statement said “the new process is more streamlined, simpler, cost effective and shorter, with a view to identifying the best Host Partner to collaborate with the IOC for the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2022.”
According to further documents released, it will be the IOC Executive Board that will choose a single preferred host country based on the Evaluation Report, and forward this choice to the IOC Session for final approval.
“The Host for YOG 2022 will be elected and invited to enter into the Co-construction period,” the Host Selection Process document explains.
The co-construction period running until mid-2019 will include all stakeholders in the development of the detailed project plans.
The first Summer YOG were held in Singapore in 2010 followed by Nanjing in 2014. The Winter YOG was first staged in Innsbruck in 2012 followed by Lillehammer in 2016 and a third is planned for Lausanne in 2020.
