The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Thursday that IOC member Sergey Bubka, a member of the IOC’s disciplinary commission, will head an eight-member commission that will monitor preparations for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
The commission includes IOC members, an international federations’ representative, and an athletes’ representative.
IOC President Jacques Rogge and Bubka will visit Singapore in early April, said an IOC statement.
Meanwhile the Straits Times reports that Beijing, host of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, will be helping Singapore in its preparations for the event. Foreign Minister George Yeo said Thursday that Beijing has offered to assist Singapore, adding that Chinese Ambassador to Singapore Zhang Xiaokang wrote to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong immediately following the announcement that Singapore won the bid. He said, “we are touched by their gesture. We will certainly take up their offer for there is much we can learn from China’s own experience”.
