Four cities – Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. – met the Monday deadline and submitted their technical proposals to the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
The group behind Boston said in a statement, “Boston 2024 is excited about the submission of its bid to the U.S. Olympic Committee, which outlines the many reasons why Boston would be an ideal host for the Summer 2024 Games, including our world-class university partners, the region’s thriving innovation, technology, financial, medical and hospitality sectors; our widespread government, business, and community support, and a unique plan for a walkable, sustainable and cost-effective Olympics”.
Los Angeles’ proposal calls for four main clusters that include the Hollywood sign, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Santa Monica beach and Riviera Country Club.
The downtown Los Angeles cluster would contain 12 venues hosting 19 events including track and field, gymnastics and swimming. The athletes’ village and the media and broadcast centres could be located there. The main stadium would be an expanded Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the centrepiece of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games.
The four cities will make their final presentations to the USOC in San Francisco on December 16. The USOC is expected to make a decision on the candidate cities within the next two months and will work with the chosen city’s organizing committee to consider whether to officially submit a bid to the IOC, who will decide on a host city for the 2024 Games in 2017.
