The economic impact report on UEFA EURO 2016 was released Thursday, evaluating the football championship considered to be the world’s third largest sporting event and was held across France during June and July 2016 in 10 host cities.
Paris’ bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games quickly embraced the positive talking points as a boost to its Olympic bid campaign.
2.4 million tickets were sold across the tournament which generated a 92 per cent occupancy. 4 million people attended fan zones.
The report was commissioned by the French Sports Minister and produced by the Limoges Centre for Sports Law and Economics (CDES). According to the report UEFA EURO 2016 generated a 1.22 billion euro positive economic impact for France, tourism spent across the tournament totaled 625.5 million euros, 613,000 tourists visited France to attend UEFA EURO 2016, visitors stayed an average 7.9 days, spending 1.54 euros per day, 95 per cent of visitors intend to return to France and 89 per cent were satisfied with their experience.

Etienne Thobois, Chief Executive of Paris 2024 said, “hosting this major international sporting event is a huge logistical operation and France efficiently delivered a great celebration. Very efficiently and with a real sense of ‘joie de vivre’.”
“UEFA EURO 2016 showcased France’s expertise in delivering large events on the world stage.”
“For example, we have over 4 million people in France and 1.2 million people in Paris celebrate safely in the fan zones, which gives a real sense of how we would share with the world an incredible, inspiring Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024”.
Eight of the stadiums used in UEFA EURO 2016 will be used to host Olympic events if Paris wins the bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Paris is bidding for the 2024 Games alongside Los Angeles and Budapest. The host city will be elected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) September 13, in Lima, Peru.
