Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Friday with Los Angeles 2024 formalizing the city’s relationship with the bid committee and its role in the candidature process for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The MOU underscores LA 2024’s commitment to privately funding the candidature process and against committing any city funds without the city’s approval. It also reinforces LA 2024’s desire for a transparent candidature process, committing its leaders to meeting regularly with the city throughout the process.
The agreement still requires formal approval by Mayor Garcetti.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said, “Los Angeles is a true Olympic city and one of the greatest sports cities in the world. I applaud the City Council’s leadership today, approving the MOU, which brings us one step closer to returning the Olympic Games to our city. Los Angeles is ready to serve and strengthen the Olympic movement and build a new Olympic legacy”.
Herb Wesson, Los Angeles City Council President said, “this morning’s action paves the way for the continued collaboration between the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles 2024. Together we are ready to bring a historic third Olympic Games to the City of Angels”.
Los Angeles 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman added, “on behalf of LA 2024, I would like to thank the LA City Council for their leadership and collaboration as we work to earn the honour of hosting the 2024 Games. Our dream, and the city’s dream, is to deliver an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, and to do so in a way that fits the long-term needs of our city and its residents. Achieving this is only possible with the city’s support. We look forward to plenty more collaboration with the City Council in the months and, hopefully, years to come”.
Also this week The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board announced that the city welcomed 45.5 million visitors in 2015 – a fifth consecutive year of record-breaking growth and an increase of 1.3 million from the previous year.
Los Angeles is bidding for the 2024 Games with Rome, Paris and Budapest.
