The Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Learning Centre opened Thursday, the first of its kind in the world.
Visitors to the centre, housed at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee Headquarters, can learn more about the Olympic movement, Olympic values, the 26 sports of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, and, according to a press release, Singapore’s journey towards hosting the first Youth Olympic Games.
There are eight zones in the learning centre, each showcasing different aspects of the Olympic Games.
Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of Singapore 2010 said, “the opening of the YOG Learning Centre is a milestone in the Singapore 2010 journey. Its setting up attests to our commitment to promote the Olympic education. The Learning Centre is also the fruit of collaboration involving many partners and supporters. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to thank the Singapore Sports Council, Scape, National Library Board, the national sports associations, and the athletes for their contributions. The strong partnership and support from public sector organizations, sports associations and individuals will bring us towards a successful and meaningful Singapore 2010”.
The centre is open Mondays to Fridays, expect for public holidays, and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning November 4. Admission is free.
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SYOGOC), said at the opening of the centre that the Youth Olympic Games are on course but the work ahead will be more challenging in the face of the global economic uncertainty, reports Straits Times.
He added, “SYOGOC is mindful of the concerns and remains committed to putting up an exciting and enriching program for the inaugural YOG”.
