The upgrading of the Tampines Bike Park that spans more than 23 hectares has been completed and certified by Union Cycliste Internationale, the International Federation for Cycling, ready to host the Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) and Mountain Bike competition for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
The upgraded venue is the first of its kind in Olympic Games and is designed so that spectators at the Singapore 2010 races will have a clear view of the BMX competition as well as watch the start and end of Time Trial and Mountain Bike events from the spectators stand.
The bike park is made up of two cycling tracks – mountain bike trail and BMX track. Sixty per cent of the trail consists of a single track, which Singapore 2010 say will provide a greater challenge in overtaking opponents.
The Singapore Mountain Bike Carnival took place May 29 and 30 to mark the completion of the Tampines Bike Park. The carnival events attracted 40 participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Singapore.
The Singapore 2010 Youth Games takes place August 14-26.
