The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors unanimously voted Tuesday to urge the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to hold the summer Games in the city, directing country officials to cooperate with a Southern California committee that it is bidding to host the Games.
A proposal written by board Chairman Mark Ridley-Thomas reads, “Los Angeles is home to more Olympians than anywhere in the world, and has twice hosted the Summer Olympic Games. The traditional reverence for sport among Los Angelenos, combined with their vast creative infrastructure, make Los Angeles uniquely capable as an Olympic host. Los Angeles can draw deeply on its past an present strengths to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 in a way that both respects tradition and the Olympic Charter and introduces new and exciting approaches to this great worldwide celebration”.
Los Angeles hosted the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984.
The board is to send a letter to the USOC to formalize its interest and cooperate with the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games in its bid.
The Southern California committee, if it decides to bid for the Games, must submit an application for a city in 2015. A decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected in 2017.
