Poznan, Poland launched a new website Thursday as part of the city’s bid to host the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. A press release says the launch of www.poznan2014.org marks the beginning of an extensive new media strategy, with elements ranging from a blog to social media connectivity through Facebook, Twitter, YoutTube, Flickr and more.

The city is located in Central Europe and has a population of more than 550,000, 20 per cent of which are students. Its one of the largest cities in Poland and a major cultural and academic centre within the region.

Ryszard Grobeiny, Mayor of Poznan, said, “we want to engage the youth where they are – online, and on their favourite social media and communication platforms. We were amazed by the initial reaction to promoting the bid on Facebook. We gained thousands of supporters within the first days after launch. This is a strong signal of the interest and enthusiasm for the Olympic Movement among European youth”.
