Sochi 2014 Venue At London 2012 Games Rejected

London authorities have rejected Russia’s proposals for a 10-million pound spaceship-style party venue at Marble Arch during the London 2012 Games which would promote the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The plan involved an open-air, 700-capacity ice rink and a festival hall linked to a VIP zone with bars and restaurants, expected to host 8,000 people a day during the Games, and forcing the closure of the site for five months.

Police, transportation and local government officials opposed the plan, citing concerns over safety and overcrowding.

Police said Marble Arch would be needed as an evacuation area in case of any emergency in Hyde Park, which is hosting Olympic events.

Hyde Park Estate Association chairman Nick Johnson said, “it was a bridge too far. We all know Sochi has been offered space by the Royal Parks. That is where this exhibition should go”.

Sochi 2014 released a statement Thursday saying, “following dialogue between ourselves, Westminster City Council, and the Metropolitan Police, we respectfully acknowledge the recommendations made regarding the plans for Sochi Centre. We understand the concerns that have been raised and have always looked to ensure the considerations, safety and enjoyment of both Sochi Centre visitors and local people are at the forefront of our minds.

“We are now working to revise our plans, in close partnership with all stakeholders, and address the concerns that have been raised. Our aim remains to showcase Sochi 2014 at an innovative and imaginative venue during London 2012, while ensuring the needs of Games visitors and local people are fully met”.
