Beijing and China’s northern city of Zhangjiakou will jointly bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, state media reported Tuesday.
China’s Olympic Committee has “in the name of Beijing city, applied to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the Games”, the official Xinhua news agency said.
Zhangjiakou, in Hebei province, about 200 km northwest of Beijing, has been proposed to host the snow sports while Beijing would host ice events.
Work will begin this year on a high-speed rail link between the two cities.
Other candidate cities for the 2022 Winter Games include Munich, Oslo, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Krakow, Lviv Ukraine, and Sweden’s Oestersund.
