Qatar To Celebrate National Sports Day As Doha Bids For 2020

H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Heir Apparent and President of Doha 2020, announced Wednesday that Qatar will celebrate an annual “National Sports Day” Public Holiday, starting in February.

The country’s “National Sports Day” Public Holiday will be held on the second Tuesday of February each year to celebrate sport and to create positive awareness about its health and social benefits, said a press release.

Government ministries and departments, public sector institutions, and many private sector organizations will organize sports activities for their employees on “National Sports Day”.

H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani said, “as Doha embarks on its bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we want to underline Qatar’s commitment to sport and our desire to instil a strong sporting culture in our country’s young population. Sport is central to Qatar’s national vision and initiatives like the “National Sports Day” will help young people in the country engage with sporting activities with positive values that will enable them to have a healthy and prosperous future”.

Doha is the host city for the 2011 Arab Games December 9 to 23.
