FCT Minister of State Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide said Tuesday that Abuja, Nigeria plans to bid for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
According to Akinjide, the FCT administration’s desire to bid for the 2018 Youth Games is hinged on the socio-economic values that will be derived from hosting the Games.
Akinjide said, “we are determined to seek ways and means by which the accelerated development of infrastructure in the FCT could be enhanced so that the socio-economic status of the inhabitants would be transformed. To this end it is the desire of this administration that an exclusive or a distinctive sports district be developed through a public-private partnership initiative. This is expected to be accomplished at little or no cost to the government and will subsequently revert to public facilities after the Games”.
She hinted that if Abuja’s bid for the 2018 Youth Games is successful in terms of quest and organization, the FCT administration would be compelled to bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Abuja lost its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.
