More than one million local people and about 300,000 tourists turned out across two days to watch the annual Super TC 2000, a touring car race held on a street-circuit in Buenos Aires central Recoleta district, home to the Recoleta Cultural Centre which is a key venue in Buenos Aires 2018’s proposed Youth Olympic Games Cultural and Education Programme.
Prior to the race each of the drivers gathered to publicly declare their support for Buenos Aires’ bid.
Francisco Irarrazavel, Buenos Aires Under-Secretary of Sport and Chief Executive of the Buenos Aires 2018 bid committee said, “we are delighted that so many passionate Argentineans as well as so many visitors to our city turned out to watch this year’s Super TC 2000 touring car race. Sport is the heartbeat of Buenos Aires and it is an integral part of everyday life, something which is unequivocally supported by these amazing spectator numbers.
“The success of this year’s Super TC 2000 once again underlines our ability to safely deliver such scale sporting events in a way that ensures maximum enjoyment for spectators and competitors.
“It is our hope that by hosting major global sports events such as the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, we can inspire young people across the wider Latin America region to engage with and participate in sport on a more regular basis”.
