A poll published in the Norwegian daily Klassekampen Thursday showed that almost half of Oslo residents are opposed to the city bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
The Sentio survey was conducted June 11 to 16 and questioned 800 people.
The city plans to hold a non-binding referendum on the bid September 9 when the country goes to the polls in a legislative election. But with less than three months to go until then, 48.4 per cent of residents said they would vote against Oslo hosting the Games, while 42.8 per cent voted in favour of a bid, and the rest were undecided.
Bid organizers have not yet obtained state guarantees totalling about 33.7 billion kroner ($5.67 billion). The government is expected to provide an answer at the end of the year.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to announce the host city for the 2022 Winter Games in August 2015.
