The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has selected Singapore to host the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Summer Games. The announcement was made at 11:00 GMT Thursday from Lausanne Switzerland.
Singapore and Moscow were the only two cities short-listed for the event. The IOC chose the winning city via a postal vote on February 14.
It was during a session in Guatemala in July 2007 that the IOC decided to create the event “to educate, engage and influence young athletes inspiring them to play an active role in their communities”.
According to the IOC, athletes from around the world ages 14 to 18 will be participating in high-level competitions, but there will also be educational programs on the Olympic values, the benefits of sport for a healthy lifestyle, the social values sport can deliver, and the dangers of doping and of training to excess and/or inactivity.
About 3,200 athletes and 800 officials will be attending the Games. The program will feature 26 sports that will also be included in the London 2012 Summer Games, with a limited number of disciplines and events.
