Referendums On Munich 2018 Winter Bid

Residents of Garmisch-Partenkirchen are to vote on whether their community should host Alpine skiing if Munich wins the bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Officials in Garmisch-Partenkirchen said two referendums – one for and one against taking part in the Olympics – had been accepted on Wednesday, and a vote will take place May 8.

A group of farmers and landowners in the town have refused to cede their land for Olympic use despite giving it up for other events.

Bavarian government officials say they hope to resolve the dispute with the farmers.

Munich 2018, responding to the two referendums, told GamesBids.com, “the people of Garmisch-Partenkirchen impressively proved their passion for winter sports during the Alpine World Ski Championships last month. Polls in the recent past have shown that the large majority is in favour of the Games. Munich 2018 is looking forward to the referendum with optimism”.
