The final of the FIS Women’s World Cup March 10-14 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen – a key venue in Munich’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games – will showcase the bid to the tens of thousands of fans expected from Bavaria, Germany and across Europe.
Munich 2018 ambassador, double Olympic champion and local hero Maria Riesch said, “the atmosphere is fantastic. I think we’re all caught up in winter sports fever after the successful Games in Vancouver. This is the perfect showcase for Munich 2018”.
According to a press release the venue, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where all the snow-based competitions would be held at the 2018 Games, will demonstrate that it is ready for major events in the future including the Alpine World Ski Championships which it will host next year.
Munich will host the ice-based events less than an hour away. The Olympic stadium, Athletes Village and main press centres will be in the existing Munich Olympic Park.
Konigssee’s artificial ice track will also be used for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events.
Willy Bogner, CEO of Munich 2018, said that well-organized World Cup events will help the bid. He said, “Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a permanent fixture in the racing calendar; athletes and spectators alike are met with world class conditions and enjoy competitive yet friendly sport of the highest standard. This is the way it should also be at the Munich 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games”.
