PyeongChang South Korea hopes the city will be lucky this time as it announced Friday that it is bidding to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. PyeongChang has had two failed bids – for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.
Xinhua quotes Kim Man-gi, a spokesman for Gangwon Province where PyeongChang is located, saying, “hosting the Winter Olympics is a long dream of the South Korean people. We believe that we can succeed in our third attempt”.
Kim said if the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) confirms PyeongChang as the country’s candidate, a bid committee will be established by March. The South Korean government will submit an official application to the IOC in October and then start the international campaign, he added.
PyeongChang is making sure that its bid will be successful this time. Last March there was a report that it was working on a detailed plan to construct a training track for bobsleigh and skeleton in close consultation with international experts. If awarded the 2018 Games, PyeongChang reportedly would build Luge/Bobsleigh and Skeleton tracks.
Also last March it was reported that venues for Ski Jump and Cross Country were 51 per cent and 71 per cent completed, and were to be finished by last October.
