A Korean student volunteer group called Saeng-jon-gyeong-jaeng has been travelling around Asia since the start of 2011 to help promote PyeongChang’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
The group has collected 2,018 messages of support from members of the public when they visited cities including Nagano, Japan, Bangkok, Thailand and Guangzhou, China. They also received messages of support from overseas tourists visiting Korea.
The students also have the backing of a group of Korean sport stars.
PyeongChang, along with the other two bid cities for the 2018 Winter Games – Annecy and Munich – will present its bid before International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials next week at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly next Tuesday in Togo.
Meanwhile it has been reported that South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will travel to South Africa next month to support PyeongChang’s bid.
Bid organizers told Reuters, “PyeongChang’s bid…is a national priority and we are delighted that our delegation in Durban will be led by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak who has shown his absolute support throughout the campaign”.
