PyeongChang’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games got a boost Thursday with the announcement that Seoul’s Mongchontoseong subway station has been rebranded as a special “PyeongChang 2018 Station”.
Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (SMRT) runs four subway lines around the city and has decorated that station with three-dimensional artworks celebrating Korea’s iconic winter sports moments, honoured Olympians, and striking images of PyeongChang’s local scenery.
The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Evaluation Commission will be in Korea next week to inspect PyeongChang’s bid, and a decision on a host city for the 2018 Games will be made July 6 in Durban, South Africa.
Yang Ho Cho, PyeongChang 2018 Chairman and CEO, said at the unveiling ceremony, “on behalf of the PyeongChang 2018 bid committee, I would like to thank SMRT for its support as we prepare to welcome the IOC Evaluation Commission next week.
“We have seen an amazing response from people who have travelled through the newly decorated station. Residents from Seoul and people from around the country are delighted to see images of their Olympic heroes and celebrate the spirit of Olympism. This fun and exciting artistic exhibition shows the PyeongChang’s bid for the Winter Games has incredible public support, and that Korea is a nation passionate about winter sports”.
