The PyeongChang 2018 bid committee has announced the launch of a dedicated Environment Committee to oversee the development of a sustainable and low carbon 2018 Olympic Winter Games Plan.
The committee’s mandate is to undertake research and advise PyeongChang 2018 regarding the construction and operation of Olympic Winter Games infrastructure such as transport, accommodation and competition venues. The committee will also work closely with PyeongChang 2018 on the bid’s technical files to ensure that the 2018 Games plan fulfills the highest sustainability standards, said a press release.
JongBeom Lee, Professor of Environment Science at Kangwon National University, has been appointed Chairman of the Environment Committee and will lead a team of 16 members drawn from experts in the fields of ecosystem management, carbon emissions and climate change.
He said, “by establishing the Environment Committee, PyeongChang 2018 is demonstrating its commitment to making sustainability the focus of the 2018 Games Plan agenda. Our aim is to equip PyeongChang 2018 with expert knowledge and research so they can deliver an Olympic Winter Games plan that upholds responsible environmental management”.
The PyeongChang 2018 bid team will be at the Vancouver 2010 Games where they plan to observe how the Vancouver Games has applied sustainable environmental systems, and learn the best practices to ensure they further progress sustainability methods, said the press release.
