2022 Winter Games Bids – Switzerland, Quebec City

Now that PyeongChang will be hosting the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, Swiss Olympic, the umbrella association of Swiss sport organizations, believes it will improve Europe’s chances of hosting the next Winter Games.

The organization released a statement saying, “we are still closely studying the conditions for a successful Swiss candidacy for the 2022 Olympic Games”.

Swiss Olympic says its executive committee will choose a candidate city on August 11. One of the options is a joint bid from the resorts of Davos and St. Moritz, and a city-based candidacy in Geneva.

A venue has to be approved by Switzerland’s sport federations at a meeting which takes place next spring.

Meanwhile Quebec City is to decide next week if it is entering the race for the 2022 Winter Games once it conducts a thorough analysis of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision to award the 2018 Games to PyeongChang.

The Ottawa Citizen reports Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume recently said his decision to bid for the 2022 Games would be influenced by the 2018 host city.

The Mayor’s press secretary said Wednesday the Mayor will meet with Quebec Premier Jean Charest, members of the Olympic task force Team Quebec, and Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC).

He said the decision will be made within a week.
