2018 Bid Cities – Munich, Annecy

While a new poll shows rising support for Munich 2018’s Winter Olympic bid, France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy says Annecy hosting the 2018 Games can give the country an economic boost.

A new poll from national broadcaster ZDF shows that 75 per cent of respondents back Munich’s 2018 bid.

According to a press release, Munich 2018’s vision is of a global Festival of Friendship “celebrated passionately in full stadia and in atmospheric fan zones up and down the country”. Munich 2018 is convinced that with three-quarters of the country in favour of the bid it can deliver on its pledge.

Katarina Witt, Chair of Munich 2018 said, “we are delighted with the latest results showing 75 per cent of Germany is supporting our bid. We see this as confirmation of the unparalleled enthusiasm for winter sports in our country, and we will be building on that enthusiasm throughout our packed calendar of winter sports events this season. We are now looking forward to the IOC Evaluation Commission visit in March”.

Meanwhile French President Nicolas Sarkozy says Annecy’s 2018 bid can provide an economic boost to the country.

Sarkozy told an audience of sports professionals Monday that work to support Olympic bids is “beneficial to the entire country, and that “sport is a motor for growth and employment”.

Sarkozy also pledged to follow through on construction of a swimming venue, part of Paris’ failed bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
