Lima to Bid to Host 130th IOC Session in 2017

Lima will bid to host the 130th International Olympic Committee (IOC) all-members session to be held in 2017, Peru’s national Olympic Committee announced Friday.

The meeting, which is scheduled at least annually to cover wide-ranging Olympic issues and for members to vote on important decisions, will attract attention in 2017 when the body will elect a host city for the 2024 Olympic Games.  Cities such as Paris, Rome, Doha and others from the United States have expressed interest in entering that Olympic bid race.

Past meetings have attracted international leaders and Royalty including Spain’s Prince Felipe, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama.

“We would be honoured to host the 130th IOC Session,” The President of the National Olympic Committee, José Quiñones González, explained.

“This is our second consecutive bid to host the IOC Session, and it would be a privilege to welcome the IOC back to Lima after their last visit in 2013 for the 15th IOC World Conference, Sport for All.

“Hosting the IOC Session is significant in continuing our strategy to host international events and we are delighted to be able to present our bid with the support and guidance of the IOC member in Peru, Mr. Iván Dibós”.

Iván Dibós added “our country is on a very exciting journey as we head towards the Pan American and Parapan Games in 2019.”

Lima is already set to host high profile events including the United Nations Climate Change Conference later this year, a policy-setting IMF-World Bank meeting in 2015, and the 2016 APEC Summit.

The 128th IOC Session has already been scheduled for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 31, 2015 and the 129th session will occur in Rio de Janiero ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

The IOC will select a host city next year; other candidates have yet to come forward.
