Chicago 2016 is celebrating “Olympic Week In America” May 5-9 based on the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Olympic Week.
The event is a school-based program of classroom lessons focused on Olympic ideals and values.
Chicago 2016 said it is committed to introducing students to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Olympic Movement and has recruited more than 50 elementary schools to participate in a specially designed weeklong program of activities.
The Opening Ceremony and the Parade of Nations were held Monday at Overton Elementary School located next to Washington Park, the proposed site for Chicago’s Olympic Stadium and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
As part of the “Parade of Nations” Overton students carried the 1996 Olympic Torch as well as flags representing 15 different countries.
