According to a Tokyo 2016 press release, more than 23 million people in Tokyo want the city to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. A new poll, commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government of 3,000 people between April 21 and 23 by Cross Marketing Inc. also found that close to 100 million Japanese back the bid.
The poll shows that 69.7 per cent of Tokyo residents, and 72.6 per cent of those residing in Japan support the Tokyo’s bid.
Also, a 1,000-person telephone survey conducted during the same three days by Adams Communication Co. Ltd., suggested that support is event higher with 73.5 per cent of Tokyo residents and 80.9 per cent of Japanese residents saying they support the bid.
Dr. Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo 2016 said, “it is an honour for Tokyo to have perhaps the largest local support base ever for an Olympic and Paralympic Games; this is due to the tens of millions of passionate Olympic supporters that live within a short distance of 97 per cent of all proposed Olympic venues”.
