International star Lenny Kravitz is headlining the opening gala of Madrid’s new Magic Box tennis venue, which a Madrid 2016 press release says is considered the best venue for indoor and outdoor tennis in the northern hemisphere.
The “Magic Night” May 8 will be preceded by a sound and light acrobatic show which will recount the history of Spain through sport and culture. The opening event is supported by Madrid’s 2016 Summer Olympic bid.
The celebration takes place on Magic Box Central Court and will host 12,500 spectators. The Magic Box’s three main courts have a retractable roof and seating capacity for 20,000 spectators, in addition to 16 outdoor courts, five indoor courts, six training courts, an indoor pool and Club House.
According to Madrid 2016 it has been described as one of the most significant buildings in worldwide sport architecture and is emblematic of Madrid’s 2016 Olympic bid.
Following the event the venue will host the Madrid Open tennis competition for more than 200 players.
Madrid 2016 bid leader Mercedes Coghen said, “Lenny Kravitz is a huge star and this will be a huge night for a huge event. In Spain we have a great relationship between sport and culture, both of which unite people and help to bring about social transformation”.
She added, “it will be a fantastic night for music, for sport, and for Madrid”.
