Spain’s Euro 2008 victory showed a “will to win” which will inspire the city in its bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, according to a press release.
Mercedes Coghen, CEO of Madrid 2016 said, “Spain has overcome the frustrations of the past to win a great victory. This will inspire Madrid to do the same and do our best to win the right to hold the world’s greatest sports event. We are a passionate sporting nation and want our city to live the ideals of the Olympic movement, to see our dream come true.
“If we show the determination and self-belief of our national footballers, then we can win too”.
Coghen, winner of an Olympic gold medal in hockey for Spain, said she believes that the drive and focus needed to win at sport are the same qualities needed to win an Olympic bid.
She said Sunday, “the race is down to four great cities and we are going to need every ounce of energy we can give to Madrid to victory. Spanish fans will be celebrating well into the night in the streets of Madrid and I am sure this spirit will inspire everyone to believe the city can do it”.
